A year in the local elementary school left the Browns searching for an alternative for Trae, 13, and Jesika, 9. When they discovered online public schools, the Browns decided to hedge their bets: They enrolled one child in iQ Academy Texas and the other in Texas Connections Academy, covering two of the three online public schools in the state.

“We wanted to find out what would be the best fit for our family,” Rochelle Brown said.

So far, so good, the family agrees.

Imagine your child going to school without ever leaving home. iQ Academy Texas is a virtual, tuition free school that offers a public school education online. CBS 19′s Amanda Kost breaks down the high-tech approach to teaching.

It’s the classroom of the future, that’s enrolling today. iQ Academy Texas elementary, middle and high school students go to public school online. Learning coach, Christian Maiden, says they provide the laptop, teachers and curriculum. “All of their course work is online. Their textbooks are online. Their teachers will talk to them online. It’s live sessions so they can hear a voice but they’re completing work and in class. So the parent really doesn’t have to do anything but monitor the student,” explained Maiden.

Summer break prompts families to evaluate education choices

iQ Academy Texas, an online school of Responsive Education Solutions in collaboration with KC Distance Learning Inc., is opening enrollment to students in more than 500 school districts across the state in grades three to eight for the 2010-11 school year, which begins on Aug. 23. The online public elementary and middle school provides students with a high-quality, tuition-free education. The curriculum offers core courses such as English and math, along with extensive elective courses. Students can access online courses and assignments virtually anytime, anywhere.
